FEATURES FOR THE WEEK Monday April 24, 2000 AN ANCIENT ECHO WITH OSAMU KITAJIMA We excavate music from 1987 by Japanese synthesist and traditional string player Osamu Kitajima. A pioneer of world fusion going back to his album early 1970s album, BENZAITEN, Osamu is an often unacknowledged pioneer of world fusion with roots directly at the source. We'll feature music from his out of print album, PASSAGES. Wednesday April 26, 2000 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH RYUICHI SAKAMOTO Japanese composer and keyboardist Ryuichi Sakamoto sit's in The Echoes Living Room for an unusually intimate performance on solo piano. Sakamoto came to renown in the 1970s as part of the synthesizer band, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and released a series of acclaimed solo albums in the 1980s. His movie scores include "The Last Emperor" and "High Heels." The enigmatic composer has two new discs. One is CINEMAGE, (Sony Classical) orchestral renderings of his film scores. The other is BTTB (Sony Classical), or BACK TO THE BASICS. It's a solo piano album, that includes a song that started out as a commercial jingle and wound up number one in Japan. Ryuichi plays that song, music form his film scores, and more in a delicate and personal performance. Thursday April 27, 2000 LAGQ: PULLING STRINGS LAGQ are the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, a group that started out performing classical repertoire, but who find themselves at a crossroads between modern and classical music worlds. On their new CD, AIR & GROUND, they play music from the Penguin Caf‚ Orchestra and turn their guitars into rhythm instruments from Cuba to India. The four members of LAGQ take us between the strings of their new music. Friday April 28, 2000 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH WILLIAM WATSON William Watson is a pianist who grew up in Mississippi, steeped in gospel music as well as the classics. William lives in San Francisco now and he's turned those roots into his own music on a pair of CDs, FIELDS and BURNHAM WOODS (Burnham Woods Records). In San Francisco, William sits down at the piano and plays some new songs and old favorites in a live performance. ***************************************************************** *denotes compilation ID#00-J07-000081 Monday, April 24, 2000 (Echoes Program 7I) ARTIST SELECTION RECORDING First Half Hour Michael Mandrell Ambrosius The Great Spiral Dance Amit Chatterjee Endless Radiance When Worlds Collide Michael Hedges Rickover's Dream Aerial Boundaries Kennedy Urge for Going Classic Kennedy Gary Stroutsos Traces of Hope People of the Willows Mickey Hart Sueno Tropicale Spirit into Sound Second Half Hour Bill Frisell Rain Rain Good Dog, Happy Man Mary Jane Lamond Will You Not Lan Duil Return, Donald?
