MOODSWINGS: IN HORIZONTAL PLANES Ex-Pretenders drummer James Hood talks about his ambient persona,
Moodswings and his new masterpiece, HORIZONTAL (Water Music).
James Hood came to renown as a rock drummer, especially with The
Pretenders. But the British-born musician began hearing a more
expansive, electronic sound and started recording as Moodswings.
In the early 90s he had a dance hit with the song, "Spiritual
High," featuring vocals by The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde.
Hood's new Moodswings album, HORIZONTAL, is a double CD excursion
into deep ambient expanse with lush compositions, sweeping lyricism,
including some haunting leads by pedal steel guitarist B.J. Cole
and a pair of vocals from Julee Cruise. In his Los Angeles bedroom
studio, James Hood gets horizontal and takes us on some moodswings.

LUMIN: LUMINATED TRANCE In Oakland Hills in northern California, we enter the living
room of Jeffrey Stott and get transported into another world where
Bulgarian chants, middle eastern strings and global percussive
grooves converge. Jeffrey's group is Lumin. Oud and yali-tambor
player Jeffrey Stott, computer programmer Michael Emenau and singer
Irina Mikhailova talk about their world fusion and affinity for
global rave heard on their new CD, HADRA (Lumin Music).

AN ANCIENT ECHO FROM AIRCRAFT
From the days of vinyl LPs we unearth an ancient relic by Aircraft.
They were a Bay Area modern instrumental group creating atmospheric
arrangements of keyboards and electric violin. Among their members
was keyboardist Doug McKeehan, who went on to be a member of Ancient
Future. Aircraft released only one album, SO NEAR SO FAR on the
defunct Catero label. In this Ancient Echo, we crank up the old
turntable and hear this lost music form another time.
Friday 04/19/02
ANCIENT FUTURE: BACK FROM THE PAST Ancient Future is the group that coined the term "world
fusion" and from their debut album in the late 1970s through
to their 1993 CD, ASIAN FUSION (Narada) they've been living by
that credo. Although they haven't released a CD in nearly a decade,
the group has been working on and has finally issued a new album,
PLANET PASSION. With a new group that includes sitarist Habib
Khan and singer Irina Mikhailova, Ancient Future continues to
essay a cross-cultural sound. We gather the band in founder Matthew
Montfort's home where they talk about the state of the World Fusion.
