DAVID & STEVE GORDON: BROTHERS IN BLOOD, SPIRIT & MUSIC David & Steve Gordon are brothers who spent most of the
1980s exploring eastern spiritualism and releasing hard core meditation
albums. But a couple of years ago, they discovered the rhythmic
side of trance music and began creating a world fusion based in
Native American flutes and African percussion, held together with
guitars and synthesizers. SACRED EARTH DRUMS and SACRED SPIRIT
DRUMS are both big selling albums. We'll talk with David and Steve
in their south California studios where they mix music and mysticism.
Tuesday 04/09/02
SOLAS: CELTIC CROSSROADS Solas talks about Celtic music at a crossroad. Solas is the
Celtic music ensemble headed up by multi-instrumentalist Seamus
Egan. Best known for writing the music for Sarah McLachlan's hit,
"I Will Remember You," Egan's Solas has been pushing
the boundaries of Celtic music from the inside out. Their latest
CD, THE EDGE OF SILENCE (Shanachie) is produced by Neil Dorfsman,
best know for his work with Dire Straits, Sting and Paul McCartney.
He brings a more electronica sound to Solas as they play original
instrumentals and covers of tunes by Jesse Colin Young, Tom Waits
and Bob Dylan. Solas talks about tweaking their Celtic heritage.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH SHAMAN'S DREAM Shaman's Dream creates musical incantations in the Echoes
Living Room. Shaman's Dream is a Los Angeles group headed up by
percussionist Craig Kohland and sitar/guitarist Chuck Jonkey.
A global traveler, Jonkey collects sound recordings and instruments
from around the world. He and Craig Kohland merge these into global
soundscapes that take a meditative hue until you listen deeper
to the environmental designs, world percussion and the custom
sitar/guitar of Chuck Jonkey. Shaman's Dream gathers some LA music
stalwarts, including Kirtan singer, Dave Stringer and percussionists
Gilbert Levy and Jim McGrath. Together, they weave a sonic meditation
live on Echoes.

HANS ZIMMER: A MUSIC WAR ROOM FOR BLACK HAWK DOWN At his Media Venture Studios, film composer Hans Zimmer takes
us to the heart of a sonic Mogadishu when he talks about his score
to BLACK HAWK DOWN (Decca). Zimmer, who won an Academy Award for
his score to The Lion King, turns his pen to darker themes for
this harrowing film. To capture the mood of clashing cultures
and technologies, he created a War Room in his studio, complete
with camouflage netting and battle debris. In this setting, his
Black Hawk Down Band, including guitarist Michael Brook and electric
cellist Martin Tillman, wove Moroccan gibris and feedback guitar
together into a halluncinatory landscape.
