DWELLER AT THE THRESHOLD ANSWERS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR The children of 1970's Space Music were born years ago. Now,
the grandchildren of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Jean Michel
Jarre are emerging. Among them are a Portland, Oregon group called
Dweller at the Threshold. This synthesizer trio creates ambient
spacescapes mixing old- style analog synthesizers with newer digital
versions. Dweller recently released the album, OUROBORUS (Hypnos),
while Dweller member Paul Ellis just put out his second CD, INTO
THE LIQUID UNKNOWN (Hypnos). We talk to the Dwellers about music
born in electronics and launched into space.

SHAMAN'S DREAM-CALLING THE SPIRITS Shaman's Dream reveals the incantations of their meditative
music on Echoes. Shaman's Dream is percussionist Craig Kohland
and sitar/guitarist Chuck Jonkey. Jonkey is a global traveler
who brings back sound recordings and instruments from around the
world. With Craig Kohland they merge these into global soundscapes
that take a meditative hue until you listen deeper to the environmental
designs, global percussion and the sitar/guitar of Chuck Jonkey.
Custom designed, it looks like a guitar but plays like a sitar.
Their latest album is PRANA (Shaman's Dream Music). Shaman's Dream
talks about their musical mysticism.

ECHOES' ALTERNATE OSCARS There were a lot of great soundtracks released in the last
year. Unfortunately, none of them were nominated for Academy Awards.
We can't substitute for Oscar, but on this edition, Echoes listens
to what Academy voters apparently didn't hear. That is, inventive
soundtracks from previous Oscar winner Hans Zimmer (Black Hawk
Down, The Pledge), Lisa Gerrard (Ali), and Yann Tierson (Amelie),
and more. Great music isn't at the Oscars, but it's on Echoes.
Thursday 03/21/02
AN ECHOES VERNAL EQUINOX Echoes marks the coming of Spring with music for when day
and night are equal, seeds go into the ground, and flowers spring
to life. Celebrate the turning of the season with an Echoes soundscape
of ambient designs and acoustic textures drawn from nature as
crickets, birds, wind and ocean are drawn into a tapestry of music
to praise the world around us.
Friday 03/22/02
DAVID DARLINGS CELLO BLUES David Darling is a master of melancholy and one of the principal
architects of ambient chamber music. His latest album, CELLO BLUE
(Hearts of Space) is a long-awaited follow-up to his acclaimed
1993 album, EIGHT-STRING RELIGION (Wind Over the Earth). It's
another exploration of his deep chamber moods, with over-dubbed
cellos, piano, synthesizers and ambiences. David talks about his
chamber sound and about his own personal travails, including a
stint in drug rehabilitation, that informed his cello blues.
