FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

ERI SUGAI-JAPANESE ENYA
Eri Sugai is a Japanese singer who's voice is layered in ecstatic choirs on her album, MAI (Pacific Moon). Like Enya, Sugai has a lush, highly lyrical sound and a voice that seems to float above the clouds. In Tokyo, we talk with Sugai about some of her unusual vocal techniques.

CARL WEINGARTEN'S DOBRO DREAMS
Carl Weingarten is an exploratory guitarist who has worked at the outer edges of progressive music for the last 20 years. Lately he's been taking the acoustic dobro and extending it's sound into evocative worlds, fusing it with electric treatments and global instruments. On his latest CD, BLUE FAITH (Multiphase Records) Carl merges his dobro with Japanese erhu and Pakistani singers, as well as electric guitar, bass and flute. It's the music of a global cinema running in Weingarten's head. In Oakland, he reveals some of his screenplays on Echoes.

PAUL SCHWARTZ: ENTERING A STATE OF GRACE
Paul Schwartz is a classical drop-out who has been updating operatic tunes on a pair of CDs called ARIA (Astor Place). On a new project called STATE OF GRACE (Windham Hill) he creates gothic hymns for the 21st century. Evoking the 11th century hymns of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen, he sets soprano Lisbeth Scott intoning Latin text over his modern, electronic arrangements. Paul Schwartz and Lisbeth Scott talk about entering a state of grace.

Dunning is the flute player with the veteran Irish band, Nightnoise and Johnson is a keyboard player with dozens of albums out. On their latest album, BYZANTIUM, they draw from the Stephen Lawhead novel of the same name and follow an Irish monk's trek to the legendary empire. In this living room concert, recorded at Jeff Johnson's home on Camano Island, Washington, they take us on this Celtic journey playing their music live with Irish fiddler John Fitzpatrick and Portland guitarist Tim Ellis.
