NATIVE AMERICAN CHAMBER MUSIC
We've been getting a lot of Native American music in lately, and
a lot of that music is taking on a distinctly classical, chamber
music fee. R. Carlos Nakai just did an album with orchestra,
Gary Stroutsos had Hidatsa songs arranged for strings and Robert
Mirabal is calling his new album, "Taos Tales," "Reservation
Chamber Music." The sound of the native flute, in particular,
seems suited for these more intimate, quasi-classical settings.
We'll be exploring the sounds of Native American chamber music.

PAT METHENY-A MAP OF THE WORLD
Guitarist Pat Metheny's music has a cinematic quality born of the
wide open Missouri spaces where he grew up. He's just scored a
soundtrack to the movie A MAP OF THE WORLD that taps into that
pastoral, mid-America sound with Metheny playing acoustic guitar.

coordinates on A MAP OF THE WORLD.

A BALINESE SOUNDSCAPE
Western musicians have been attracted to the sound of Bali since
Debussy heard a Gamelan orchestra at the turn of the last
century. We'll hear some modern Balinese-inspired music by David
Parsons, Jalan Jalan, Ancient Future and more.

MICHAEL MANDRELL-GLOBAL GUITARS FROM TAOS
Michael Mandrell is a journeyman musician. He played with the
world fusion group, Taos and now has a solo CD called THE GREAT
SPIRAL DANCE (Ageless Music). Michael fuses gentle guitar
picking with world music touches and evocative compositions on
his debut. We talk with Michael about his music and life on the
road.
