INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK

Monday 02/23
AN INTERVIEW WITH JON HASSELL
Fourth world pioneer still exploring

Jon Hassell’s latest album is called Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street, a title taken from a 13th century poem by Rumi. Mixing laptops, layered compositions, and live sound processing, it often sounds like Miles Davis meeting Arvo Pärt, tuning in signals from space. We talk with Jon Hassell about Fourth World music in the 21st Century.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ERIK SCOTT
Bass guitar from Alice Cooper to cinematic space
He's played with Alice Cooper, Flo & Eddie and was a charter member of Sonia Dada. But when he sat in his home north of Chicago all by himself, bassist Erik Scott came up with an introspective, all-instrumental album that showed what the electric bass can do in the service of evocative compositions. His album is called Other Planets. We take a trip to Erik Scott's.

LOSAR: A TIBETAN CELEBRATION
It's 2009 in the U.S., but it's 2136 in Tibet
The Tibetan New Year is a multi-day celebration and we'll jump into the first day with a Himalayan soundscape. We journey to the mountain with music from Nawang Khechog, Choying Drolma, David Parsons and more in an atmosphere where the air is thin and the spirit high.

Thursday 02/26
It's new music from Acoustic Eidolon on Echoes. This duo of guitar, guitjo and cello is creating an evocative chamber music sound on their CD, River of Fire and ignites it along with a spacescape from German synthesist Robert Schroeder.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH THE MARCIN WASILEWSKI TRIO
Hypnotic journeys from a Polish jazz trio
The Marcin Wasilewski Trio are musical descendants of Keith Jarrett and Paul Bley and they play an intuitive brand of chamber jazz improvisation that travels melodic pathways into improvisational journeys. They play a music of colors and textures on January, their latest of two albums out on ECM records. The Marcin Wasilewski Trio unfolds their gentle, but probing music live on Echoes.
