FEATURED THIS WEEK:

Tuesday 01/31 http://www.echoes.org/playlists/0605B.html
PETER KATER: TONE POEMS FOR THE ELEMENTS
Pianist channels the elements in ambient chamber works.

Pianist Peter Kater released a 4 CD set last year called THE ELEMENTS SERIES: EARTH, WATER, FIRE, AND AIR. It's a gentle, introspective series of ambient chamber works that stay just to the right side of sentimentality and at times, reach the sublime. In his home in southern California, Kater and wind player Richard Hardy talk about a music that hovers at the border between improvisation and composition.

BLUETECH: DROPPED, STIRRED AND CHILLED ELECTRONICA
Electronic artist follows the Sines and drops into Singularities

Bluetech is a Bay Area laptop composer whose latest album, Sines and Singularities (Aleph-Zero Records) is a delirious ascent into electro-ambient architecture, full of fractured melodies and kinetic, dub-inflected rhythms. In a San Francisco Victorian home that could stand in for the 60's psychedelic abodes of the Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead, Bluetech talks about a new music for mind expansion that's even more plugged in.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DEAN DE BENEDICTIS
Veteran synthesist turns his bedroom into an ethno-techno space probe

Dean De Benedictis makes an introspective brand of electronica full of literary and mystical references. He records under his own name and as Surface 10 and has also started an electronic community in Los Angeles called the Fateless Flow Collective. His latest CD, SALVAGING THE PAST (Spotted Peccary), is a recording of emotional resonance as De Benedictis looks back at his music, fusing elements of German space music, glitch electronica, operatic vocals and his Native flutes. In his bedroom studio, De Benedictis fires up vintage synthesizers, wooden flutes and is joined by operatic soprano Cathryn Deering for a free descent into his music, live.

Friday 02/03 http://www.echoes.org/playlists/0548D.html
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MICHAEL HEWETT
Yoga guitarist in global fusion grooves

Michael Hewett is a post-Michael Hedges finger-style guitarist who runs his instrument through digital delays and effects and wraps them in modern chamber arrangements with cello, bass and percussion. With an ear toward the global village, Hewett has recently released his third album, ALLY, a recording of expansive world chamber music compositions highlighted by Hewett's deft guitar playing. Michael Hewett brings his quartet into the Echoes Living Room where they play live.
