PAUL SCHWARTZ: ENTERING A STATE OF GRACE
Paul Schwartz is a classical drop-out who has been updating operatic
tunes on a pair of CDs called ARIA (Astor Place). On a new project
called STATE OF GRACE (Windham Hill) he creates gothic hymns for
the 21st century. Evoking the 11th century hymns of Abbess Hildegard
von Bingen, he sets soprano Lisbeth Scott intoning Latin text
over his modern, electronic arrangements. Paul Schwartz and Lisbeth
Scott talk about entering a state of grace.

SORMA-COLLECTIVE ILLUSIONS
Sorma is a Japanese collective that includes members of Jalan
Jalan and has that same sense of Eastern atmosphere, but their
music here is much more dynamic. Thundering drums, chanting vocals
and electronic atmospheres's mix in with traditional Japanese
sounds in their highly imagistic album, MIRAGE OF THE EAST (Pacific
Moon). We talk with Sorma #1, Yoichi Shimada about their eastern
fusion.

PRESTON REED: ACOUSTIC GUITAR MANIFESTO
Preston Reed wasn't trying to make a statement on his new album,
HANDWRITTEN NOTES (Outerbridge), but he did. Preston is an under-rated
marvel of the acoustic guitar. His name used to be mentioned in
the same breath as Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges and judging from
this tour de force solo album, it still should be. Reed uses many
of the same two-handed techniques employed by Hedges, tapping
his strings and banging on his instrument. He works a delirious
combination of deft polyrhythms and melodic counterpoint that
spins your head, yet, there's also a rustic folk edge to his playing
that keeps it earthy. Preston comes to Echoes to talk about his
twenty year career and continuing evolution.

YO-YO MA AND TAN DUN
Chinese composer Tan Dun and cellist Yo-Yo Ma united for one of
the unique and acclaimed film score for CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN
dragon. We talk to both artists about the challenges of making
a cross-cultural, east-west score and a music that emerges as
much from western Chinese shamanism as European classicism. Yo-Yo
Ma and percussionist David Cossins also play music live from the
score.
