INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK

Monday 01/22
AN INTERVIEW WITH DESERT DWELLERS: DIGITAL BEDOUINS
Electronic savants sample Eastern sounds
Desert Dwellers are something of an ad hoc group, with members in California and New Mexico who follow in the Trance-Indian grooves of artists like the Midival Punditz and Loop Guru, mixing Indian and Middle Eastern exotica into surreal and flowing soundscapes powered by the chilled grooves of electronic percussion, acoustic tablas, digital loops and raga cycles. We have a digital conversation with the band, whose album, Flames, was an Echoes CD of the Month in November.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH PRESTON REED

A finger style guitarist plugs in
Preston Reed built his reputation over the last three decades playing acoustic, finger-style guitar. People like Kaki King cite him as an influence. But since he moved to Scotland, Preston has become infatuated with the sound of Wes Montgomery-style electric jazz guitar. Preston Reed comes into the Echoes Living Room and plugs in to play his new music live.

REINHOLD HEIL & JOHNNY KLIMEK INTERVIEW: RUNNING TOWARD AMBIENCE
Hollywood outsiders redefine the film score
Run Lola Run was one of the most powerful and innovative films of the last decade. Part of the reason was a propulsive soundtrack by Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek along with director Tom Tykwer. Since then they've scored films ranging from the dark psychological thriller One Hour Photo to George Romero's zombie flick, Land of the Dead. In their southern California studios, Heil and Klimek talk about thwarting film soundtrack expectations and the difficulty of finding your own voice in Hollywood.
