FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Tuesday 01/27/04
DEEP SKY DIVERS: NORTH COUNTRY SPACE MUSIC
Deep Sky Divers are an electronic duo from Northern England and southern Scotland. Inspired by German space music, they've been forging their own electronic designs on albums like THE NEW FAST LANE (Any Robinhood). Synthesists Jon Short and David Jones talk about their music and Jon pounds out the melody of their best known tune, "Raging Calm" on the very same upright piano on which he learned to play as a child.

Thursday 01/29/04
CLIFF MARTINEZ: SOUND SCULPTURE SOUNDTRACKS
Cliff Martinez is one of the more idiosyncratic of Hollywood film composers. The original drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, he's since carved out a niche career with his atmospheric soundtracks, mostly for director Steven Soderbergh including Sex, Lies and Videotape and Solaris. In addition to the usual film composers tools of orchestra and synthesizers, Martinez has custom instruments including American gamelan and the other-worldly sound sculptures of the French Baschet brothers. He merges these into haunting scores that brim with atmosphere and mystery. In his Los Angeles home, Martinez plays his instruments and talks about the interior spacescapes of Solaris and his latest film, Wicker Park.

Friday 01/30/04
IAN BODDY & MARK SHREEVE: WELDING THE ANALOG ARC
Ian Boddy and Mark Shreeve are now the grand old men of English space music. Since the late 1970s, Ian Boddy has released dozens of solo recordings. Mark Shreeve came along a few years later, but has several solo albums to his credit as well as a pack of CDs with his group, Redshift. The pair also record as a duo called Arc and they have a new CD out, BLAZE (DiN Records). In Mark Shreeve's London studio, the duo talk about creating retro space music in the modern world.
