FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 1/21/02
DAVID DARLING'S CELLO BLUES
David Darling is a master of melancholy and one of the principal architects of ambient chamber music. His latest album, CELLO BLUE (Hearts of Space) is a long-awaited follow-up to his acclaimed 1993 album, EIGHT-STRING RELIGION (Wind Over the Earth). It's another exploration of his deep chamber moods, with over-dubbed cellos, piano, synthesizers and ambiences. David talks about his chamber sound and about his own personal travails, including a stint in drug rehabilitation, that informed his cello blues.

Tuesday 01/22/02
ALIAS ZONE
Alias Zone is as much a location of the imagination as the name of a Southern California band. On their debut album, LUCID DREAMS (CyberMotion), Alias Zone works out a cyber-improvisatory vocabulary, mixing samples in real time loops and digital processing, topped off with flutes, bass and beat poetry. In their San Fernando Valley studio, the three residents of Alias Zone take us into a dream state.

Wednesday 01/23/02
LIVING ROOM CONCERT: RICHARD LEO JOHNSON
Richard Leo Johnson turned a few heads, and knocked a few others off with his album, FINGERTIP SHIP. Now he's returned with a follow-up album that continues his quirky relationship with the acoustic guitar. Language is full of twisted impressionism and odd angels, as Johnson orchestrates a finger ballet on his double-necked acoustic 6&12 String Guitar. He's still playing fast but he slows down long enough to talk about his new journey into the fretboard and beyond.

Friday 01/25/02
BRIAN GORE: FINGER-STYLE CRUSADER
Brian Gore is from a third generation of finger-style guitarists influenced by the "grandfathers" Leo Kottke and John Fahey and the "fathers," Will Ackerman and Alex de Grassi. He's a solo guitar proselytizer who stages International Guitar Night performances with the leading exponents of finger-style guitar. Brian Gore talks about his acoustic guitar crusade, his guitar playing family, and his own music, heard on the recent album, LEGACY (Acoustic Music).
