JEFF BEAL: CARNIVALE'S DARK MIDWAY

HBO's Carnivale is a dark, mystical peek inside a depression-era carnival touring dust bowl that exist in a nether world between Christianity and the supernatural. The DVD of the first season has just been released as well as a soundtrack CD (on Varese Sarabande). The second season begins this month. Jeff Beal, whose recent work includes scores for "Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion" and "Pollack," composes the music for this deep psychological landscape that harkens back to a rustic americana but with a distinctly ambient sound. Beal and series executive producer Howard Klein talk about a music full of dust storms and magic.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ADRIAN LEGG

Adrian Legg is a guitarist's guitarist. As John Diliberto wrote in the liner notes of Legg's new CD, INHERITANCE (Favored Nations Acoustic), "Adrian Legg can bring you to tears with the sweetest melancholy melody played out in a filigree of finger-picking intricacy, leaving one gasping for air at the rarefied beauty of it all. But he can just as easily pluck and twang in a virtuoso display, bending notes in a drunkenly delirious slur of lines that slip and slide like Jim Carrey at a taffy pull." Legg does all that and more when he plugs into the Echoes Living Room to play live.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MARY YOUNGBLOOD

The Native flute started out as an instrument for males, a courting instrument of Lakota tribesmen. But Mary Youngblood is from a new generation of Native women who have made the instrument her own. Born of Seminole and Aleut parentage, Youngblood won a Grammy Award in 2002 for her CD, BENEATH THE RAVEN MOON (Silver Wave Records). Her latest CD is FEED THE FIRE and that's nominated for a Grammy this year. In this reprise broadcast, Mary Youngblood comes to the Echoes Living Room where she releases her Native flute melodies live.

JEFF JOHNSON & BRIAN DUNNING: FANTASY PILGRIMAGE

Remember classic concept albums like Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, or Yes' TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS? Washington state keyboardist Jeff Johnson and Irish flutist Brian Dunning harken back to those days with albums like SONGS OF ALBION and BYZANTIUM that use books as imagistic launch pads. Their latest CD is THE KATURRAN ODYSSEY (Hearts of Space), based on a graphic novel of the same name illustrated by Terryl Whitlach. She created many Star Wars creatures. The musicians and artist talk about their collaborative journey.
