FEATURES FOR THE WEEK Monday January 3, 2000 ROBERT MIRABAL'S MYSTIC FLUTES If you've seen the PBS broadcast of Spirit, then you've seen Robert Mirabal, a featured performer playing Native flute, drums and dancing. On his own, Robert has been making Native music for years, with solo recordings, New Age moods and even a rock album. On his latest CD, "Taos Tales," Robert Mirabal creates a native fusion music, with a chamber group of electric guitar, cello and percussion. Inspired by his native home in Taos, New Mexico, it's an often haunting and disturbing work. Mirabal talks about bringing a vision of his home to the world. Tuesday January 4, 2000 A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH TRACY SILVERMAN Tracy Silverman is a journeyman violinist who was a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet, has recorded with Minimalist pioneer Terry Riley and performed on several Windham Hill collections. We capture the violinist in his home where he gathers a group that includes bassist Michael Manring to play music from Tracy's debut album, "Trip to the Sun" (Windham Hill). Thursday January 6, 2000 GARY STROUTSOS - LOST MELODIES FROM NATIVE LANDS Gary Stroutsos used to be a jazz-Afro-Cuban flute player until he discovered the Native American flute. Now he's one of the few true virtuosos on that instrument. We talk with Gary about his flute quest and a new CD called "People of the Willows" (Makoche). It's based on melodies of the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes and features Stroutsos' flute along with piano, global percussion and Native singers Keith Bear and Nellie Youppee. We talk with Gary Stroutsos and his group about reviving lost melodies from Native Lands. Friday January 7, 2000 MARK HUNTON-NATIVE WINDS ON HIMALAYAN SUMMITS Mark Hunton plays Native American flutes, but he doesn't play Native American music. His debut CD, "Annapurna: The Towering Sky" (Spotted Peccary) is inspired by his travels through the Himalayas. In a dynamic sound of percussion, synthesizers and electric guitar, Hunton orchestrates the soundtrack of his travels. We talked to him at base camp near San Diego where he lives. ***************************************************************** *denotes compilation ID# 99-J07-00001 Monday, January 3, 2000 (Echoes Program 43E) ARTIST SELECTION RECORDING First Half Hour Mark Dwane Spirits of the Angels, Aliens, & Rainforest Archetypes Joaquin Lievano Ecologie Echoes Living Room Concerts Vol. II Jon Hassell Caravanesque Fascinoma Isadar Love Chaconne Active Imagination Second Half Hour ROBERT MIRABAL'S MYSTIC FLUTES Robert Mirabal Onate Taos Tales Hege Rimestad Krishna's Cousin Northern Nights* Joshua Bell & In the Nick of Time Short Trip Home Edgar Meyer Conrad Praetzel Elder Days Receive Third Half Hour Rudiger Opperman Wide Horizon Fragile Balance Barry & Shelley Parting Friends Wondrous Love Phillips Uakti Tiquie River & Aguas da Amazonia Japura River California Guitar Kan-non Power An Opening Act Trio Spacecraft Earthtime Tapestry Earthtime Tapestry Peter Ross Afro Blue Primitive Heart Fourth Half Hour Angelo Badalamenti Lauren's Walking The Straight Story Suzanne Teng Silver Lake Mystic Journey Ulli Bogershausen Zu Allein Pictures Ravi Calabash Journeys of the Sunwalker David Parsons Laplapan Ngaio Gamelan ****************************************** WANT TO ADD ANY OF THESE CDS TO YOUR COLLECTION?
