Cavern_coverTim Gane was a founding member of the post-rock group, Stereolab, who were underground darlings for the better part of 25 years. Gane played guitar and keyboards in the group and it’s the electronic side that comes out in a recent project called Cavern of Anti-Matter. This is a group steeped in analog synthesizers and worships at the electronic altar of 70s German groups like Neu! Harmonia, Cluster and Can.

Tim Gane: Basically when I was about 13 or 14, I discovered electronic music like Cabaret Voltaire. It sounded so crazy to me and was this track called “Nag Nag Nag” by Cabaret Voltaire. And from that, I got onto Throbbing Gristle and other stuff.  And I noticed I was buying this paper called Sounds, basically then, and they did a review of the first reissue of the first Faust album, which was reissued I think in 1980.  And they described this album that said it was even stranger than all these things and done years before, and I thought that can’t be possible and it was amazing.  And then from Faust, I followed that.  And then in 1991, I bought, ’92 I bought the first, my first Neu! record, and then I got into all the German Krautrock around that time in the early ‘80s.

Cavern of Anti-Matter’s debut album, Void Beats Invocation Trek is a wild journey into electronic ecstasy. We talk to Tim Gane about plugging in to the sound of his youth.
