FEATURED THIS WEEK:

SIGUR ROS: DARK INNOCENCE

Sigur Ros is the enigmatic Icelandic band that has entranced listeners inclined towards a more abstract and atmospheric sound. Heavy reverb, bowed guitars and lyrics sung in a high, wispy falsetto call to mind a fantasy world of hidden shadows and dark corners. But there's also a naivete to this music which often has childhood as a source of inspiration. Sigur Ros's latest album is TAKK (Geffen). We head into shadows of sound with Sigur Ros.

ECHOES 16th ANNIVERSARY

Hard to believe it was 16 years ago that Echoes launched itself into the ether. We celebrate our Sweet Sixteen birthday with two hours featuring 16 Icons of Echoes. This seamless soundscape will be a quintessential Echoes program populated by stalwarts like Dead Can Dance, Brian Eno, Loreena McKennitt and 13 more artists who have been a big part of the reverberations heard on Echoes. While the music is on the air, on the Echoes website you'll find an extensive array of features and living room concerts with these Sweet Sixteen artists.

SUMNER MCKANE: NOR' EASTERN AMERICANA

In his basement in Portland, Maine, Sumner McKane takes us into his ambient Americana. During the night, he plays in a country and western band, but during the day, he retires to his basement studio where he orchestrates an atmospheric brand of ambient Americana, over-dubbing and looping multiple guitar lines into tone poems that evoke the great western skies more than the Maine coast or certainly, his basement. His latest album is NORTH (Don't Hit Your Sister Records). Sumner McKane talks about the long, dusty, snow covered trail.

If a CD we played is available from Amazon.com or iTunes, there will be a link to it on the playlist. Clicking the "buy it" button will direct you to that item's page on amazon.com or iTunes, where you can get more information about the CD, read reviews, and often listen to soundclips. If you decide to buy the CD, a portion of the sale is credited to Echoes program, helping our non-profit organization to continue producing these shows. Please remember to link to amazon.com through the Echoes website, there's no additional cosst for you, and you can help us with every purchase.

Very old playlists are archived on a gopher server at The Well:

We no longer administer this gopher site, but we're thrilled to see that it's still up and running. Thanks to the kind folks at The Well for maintaining it.
