FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

PATRICK BALL'S CELTIC JOURNEY
Long before the Celtic craze hit America, harpist Patrick Ball was spreading the Irish gospel, playing the songs of legendary bard Turlough O'Carolan and other Celtic tunes. Born in America and living in northern California, he's recorded nine albums in the last 20 years, each one full of the lilting melodies and haunting atmospheres of the Celtic lands. He's just released an anthology of his music, MUSIC ON THE WIND (Celestial Harmonies). Ball is one of the few masters of the wire-strung harp, which was played in the 17th and 18th century, unlike the conventional gut and nylon stringed harps of today. Patrick Ball weaves the tale of his Celtic journey.

CD OF THE MONTH
It's The Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai for this month's CD of the Month, and it's the latest from Japanese synthesist Kitaro. Based on the sounds of bells from the Temples of Shikoku, it's Kitaro's best album in years.

Thursday 09/18/03
KAKI KING: HER WAY OR THE SUBWAY
Kaki King began her career playing on New York City subway stops. Now this frighteningly virtuosic and independent guitar player from Brooklyn has a new, critically acclaimed CD called EVERYBODY LOVES YOU (Velour Records). She's adapted the extended techniques of Preston Reed and Michael Hedges and discovered her own distinctive voice. Kaki talks about a music journey from New York subways to concert stages.

Friday 09/19/03
CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY'S CLASSICAL ROCK PIANO
Christopher O'Riley is a noted classical concert pianist as well as the host of Public Radio International's from the Top radio program. You'll usually hear him playing Scriabin and Mozart, but on his new album, he plays the music of Radiohead, the critically acclaimed English art rock group. O'Riley started playing this music on piano during breaks on FROM THE TOP and wound up with an album's worth of material now called TRUE LOVE WAITS: Christopher O'Riley Plays the Music of Radio Head (Sony Classical). Christopher talks about his obsession with Radiohead and transferring their music to piano in what he calls the most difficult music he's ever played.
