FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Tuesday August 23, 2005
CHRIS BLACKWELL & VEDIC PATH
Famed producer Chris Blackwell, the man who created Island Records and launched the careers of Bob Marley and U2, mounts World Voices with Vedic Path (Palm Pictures), a mystic visual and musical journey into an India of the imagination. Vedic Path is a celebration of Indian spirit, music and culture, but don't expect a CD of mantra chants and droning tambouras. Instead, Vedic Path offers an impressionistic journey through an India that's been globalized and re-imagined. We talk with Blackwell and Vedic Path compiler Bruno Guez about their imaginary India.

AN ANCIENT ECHO FROM POPOL VUH
Popol Vuh was a legendary German band who scored most of Werner Herzog's films including Aguirre, the Wrath of God. Florian Fricke, the founder and principal composer of the group passed away a few years ago. Now many of Popol Vuh's albums are being re-released, many of them coming out for the first time ever in the U.S. We'll be sampling a trio of thee recordings, including their soundtrack to Fitzcaraldo.

If a CD we played is available from Amazon.com or iTunes, there will be a link to it on the playlist. Clicking the "buy it" button will direct you to that item's page on amazon.com or iTunes, where you can get more information about the CD, read reviews, and often listen to soundclips. If you decide to buy the CD, a portion of the sale is credited to Echoes program, helping our non-profit organization to continue producing these shows. Please remember to link to amazon.com through the Echoes website, there's no additional cosst for you, and you can help us with every purchase.

Very old playlists are archived on a gopher server at The Well:

We no longer administer this gopher site, but we're thrilled to see that it's still up and running. Thanks to the kind folks at The Well for maintaining it.
