FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 08/12/02
ECHOES OF AFRICA
Echoes explores new music from the African continent traveling from Morocco to South Africa. We'll hear new music from Fania, Stelle Chiweshe, Samite, Al-Andalus, Kronos Quartet and more as we explore the soulful and atmospheric side of Africa.

Tuesday 08/13/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH OTTMAR LIEBERT
This is a rare Echoes living room concert in front of a live audience. We caught Ottmar Liebert and his Luna Negra XL group at the Sunoco Performance Theater at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Sponsored by Echoes affiliate station, WITF-FM, John Diliberto gets on stage with Liebert and company, who play and talk about the music that is now called Nouveau Flamenco.

Wednesday 08/14/02
DARVISH'S WORLD FUSION DERVISH
The sound of world fusion comes to Echoes with Darvish, an inventive Bay Area trio with pianist Victor Spiegel, cellist Moses Sedler and percussionist Peter Maund. Together these musicians weave an improvised global landscape fraught with Indian modalities and Middle Eastern rhythms. We gather the three members of Darvish together to tell their tale.

Friday 08/16/02
SUZANNE CIANI-MUSIC FROM THE GROTTO
Keyboardist Suzanne Ciani is still well-known for her commercial work in the 1970s and 80s, including the sound of a can of coke being opened, the GE dishwasher beep and the music you hear whenever you get AT&T on the phone. She was also a pioneer of contemporary electronic music, releasing her first album, SEVEN WAVES, on the avant-garde Finadar label in 1984. Since then, Ciani has left her avant-garde roots, including studies with Donald Buchla, far behind. She makes a romantic music now and is more likely to sit behind her piano keyboard than her computer keyboard. In her coastal Marin County home, Ciani talks about the pastoral influences on her music and takes us into her grotto.
