FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday 8/06/01
OTTMAR LIEBERT REVISITS HIS YOUTH
Ottmar Liebert is known for his innovative flamenco hybrid, but he grew up listening to rock and roll. On a new CD called LITTLE WING (EPIC) he revisits the music of his youth, playing songs by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and the title track by Jimi Hendrix. From his Sante Fe home, Liebert talks about his musical influences as well as the new originals on his album.

Tuesday 08/07/01
SHEILA CHANDRA-OUT OF THE ZONE DRONES
Throughout the 1990s, Sheila Chandra has charted a remarkable vocal trail, exploring cross-cultural references from India to Ireland. Her trilogy of albums, Weaving My Ancestors Voices, Zen Kiss and Abonecronedrone, (Realworld) are the "Well-Tempered Clavier" of vocal drone music. A throat disorder nearly ended her career. But now, an operation later, Sheila Chandra sings anew. She has a new CD called This Sentence Is True (The Previous Sentence Is False) (Shakti). Sheila talks about her new experimental vocals and the drone zone.

Wednesday 08/08/01
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM
Afro Celt Sound System plugs into the Echoes living room and blows all circuits with their kinetic mix of African and Celtic melodies and rhythms tied to ambient and techno grooves. Playing music from their latest CD, VOLUME THREE: FURTHER IN TIME (Realworld), Afro Celt suffuses the Echoes Living with Iarla O'Lionard's lilting sean nos themes and N'Faly Kouyate's rippling kora and chants. Melodies of Irish whistle and uilleann pipes ride atop a percussive storm of African, Indian and Middle Eastern percussion.

Friday 8/10/01
NANA - GLOBAL GREEK SALAD
Nana Simopoulos is a Greek musician whose roots in world fusion extend to work with trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden and percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. Recording as Nana, she works sitar, cello, flutes, saraangi, didgeridoo and percussion into lush tapestries framed by her vocal chants. On her new album, "Daughters of the Sun" she honors her heritage with music from a theater production of "Antigone Through Time." In her Manhattan apartment, Nana reveals her global orchestrations.
