FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

PHILIP AABERG'S MONTANA MEMORIES
Philip Aaberg has lived in San Francisco for the better part of three decades, but he was born and raised in Montana and that's the landscape that shapes his music. A pianist who elicits accolades from George Winston, Will Ackerman and Samite, Aaberg came to renown in the mid-1980s at the height of Windham Hill Records and made several albums for the label, including his critically acclaimed debut, HIGH PLAINS. Philip Aaberg looks back on a career that includes hit records with Elvin Bishop ("Fooled Around and Fell in Love") and Henry Gross ("Shannon")and his own music, in which he evokes the endless horizons and small pleasures of the plains states with his melodically arresting solo piano compositions. His 2001 album, LIVE FROM MONTANA (Sweetgrass Music) was nominated for a Grammy Award.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH FREE SYSTEM PROJEKT
Free System Projekt is a Dutch synthesizer trio following the circuitry laid down by Tangerine Dream in the 1970s. On albums like POINTLESS REMINDER (Quantum) they use modern synthesizers modeled on old-style analog instruments like the Moog synthesizer, improvising spacescapes around throbbing rhythms, ethereal Mellotron atmospheres and modal melodies. Sitting on the Echoes Living Room floor, surrounded by wires, computers and keyboards, Free System Projekt lifts us into the stratosphere in this live performance.

Thursday 08/01/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH TONY MCMANUS
Scottish guitar virtuoso Tony McManus performs live on Echoes.
Tony McManus is a finger-style guitarist who has three CDs, including his latest, CEOL MORE (Compass). He adapts traditional Scottish songs and Highland Pipe tunes to his six strings. Pulling up a chair in the Echoes Living Room he unfolds the complex Celtic melodies of his music, creating aire-like renditions of works by Charles Mingus, Robert Burns and more.

Friday 08/02/02
CRAIG ARMSTRONG: CLASSICAL AMBIENCE
Craig Armstrong is a classically trained composer and arranger from Glasgow, but his muse keeps drawing him towards rock music. He had a band called Texas in the 1980s and came to renown working with Bristol's Massive Attack. His skills with electronica orchestrations led to his film scores on Romeo & Juliet and Plunkett and Macleane. He's just released his second solo album, AS IF TO NOTHING (Melankolic), which features collaborations with U2's Bono and an ambient reworking of King Crimson's Starless. Craig Armstrong opens up his ambient scores on Echoes.
