FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

SHEILA CHANDRA-OUT OF THE ZONE DRONES
Throughout the 1990s, Sheila Chandra has charted a remarkable vocal trail, exploring cross-cultural references from India to Ireland. Her trilogy of albums, WEAVING MY ANCESTORS VOICES, ZEN KISS and ABONECRONEDRONE, (Realworld) are the "Well-Tempered Clavier" of vocal drone music. A throat disorder nearly ended her career. But now, an operation later, Sheila Chandra sings anew. She has a new CD called THIS SENTENCE IS TRUE (THE PREVIOUS SENTENCE IS FALSE) (Shakti). Sheila talks about her new experimental vocals and the drone zone.

Wednesday 06/27/01
R. CARLOS NAKAI'S AMBIENT GLOBAL KIVA
On his latest album, IN A DISTANT PLACE (Canyon) R. Carlos Nakai articulates a world between cultures. He merges his Native flutes with Tibetan Nawang Khechog's flutes and voice, intertwined and morphed through the hybrid guitar string orchestrations of William Eaton and tribal rhythms of Will Clipman. We gather Nakai, Eaton & Clipman to talk about a music between worlds.
