A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH PHILIP AABERG Pianist Philip Aaberg plays live on Echoes. Philip Aaberg
is a musician who inspires accolades from George Winston, Will
Ackerman and Samite. He came to renown in the mid-1980s at the
height of Windham Hill Records and made several albums for the
label, including his critically acclaimed debut, HIGH PLAINS.
Born in Montana, Aaberg evokes the endless horizons and small
pleasures of the plains states with his melodically arresting
solo piano compositions. His 2001 album, LIVE FROM MONTANA (Sweetgrass
Music) was nominated for a Grammy Award. We capture Philip playing
alone in a San Francisco Bay living room, performing music from
across his career, including "Marias River Breakdown,"
heard recently on the score to PBS's ANSEL ADAMS.
Wednesday 05/08/02 TOM HEASLEY: AMBIENT
TUBA "Ambient" is an adjective we toss around a lot on
Echoes, but we've never applied it to the tuba until Tom Heasley's
album, WHERE THE EARTH MEETS THE SKY (Hypnos). He's just released
his second recording, ON THE SENSATIONS OF TONE (Innova). Heasley,
who lives in Palo Alto, Ca, uses extensive electronic processing
to turn his tuba into a pod of whales and a galactic transport
ship in slow motion, languid soundscapes. It often sounds electronic,
but every sound begins on the tuba. Heasley demonstrates his techniques
on Echoes.
Thursday 05/09/02
KODO'S KONCUSSIVE KONCLAVE Kodo is the world renowned Japanese Taiko drum ensemble that
took the sacred drums out of the temples and onto the concert
stage in wildy acrobatic performances. On a new album called MONDO
HEAD (Red Ink), Kodo teams up with Grateful Dead/Planet Drum percussionist
Mickey Hart to create a global percussion orchestra. Hart taps
into the impressionistic side of Kodo, aligning them with master
drummers like Zakir Hussain and Giovanni Hidalgo as well as the
world fusion vocal group Vas. Ryutaro Kaneko of Kodo, and Mickey
Hart talk about their percussion garden.
Friday 05/10/02
RICHARD SEARLES: RENAISSANCE FAIRE Richard Searles talks about ye olde music in the new age.
Richard Searles is a classical guitarist creating a modern chamber
music based in Renaissance era forms. Playing with harpsichords
and tablas, he's been orchestrating a music that mixes equal parts
of Renaissance Faire, Tolkienesque fantasies and chamber music
designs since the 1980s. His latest album is THE GREEN MAN (Earthdance).
We visit Richard Searles in his studio outside of Los Angeles
where he takes a journey to the past.
