FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Tuesday 04/29/03
Bill Laswell: Dub Saboteur
Bill Laswell has been one of the most provocative figures in modern music for over two decades. The producer and bassist came to renown as the producer of Herbie Hancock's mid-80s hit, "Rock-it" and productions of Mick Jagger and Nona Hendryx. But Laswell's real art was as a sonic provocateur and Dub music assassin. He put together hallucinogenic world music ensembles including Materiel, deep ambient excursions and free jazz assaults with Last Exit and Sonny Sharrock, all informed by the sound shifting aesthetic of Reggae dub music. In this first of two features, we hear about the art of sound, collaboration, and deep bass dub with Bill Laswell.

Wednesday 04/30/03
Bill Laswell & Gigi-Ethiopian Extremes
Ejigayehu Shibabaw, better known as Gigi, is an Ethiopian singer songwriter who has found herself romantically and musically entwined with one of the iconoclasts of modern music, producer and bassist Bill Laswell. He produced her debut album, GIGI (Palm) and then remixed the whole affair on the ambient CD, ILLUMINATED AUDIO (Palm). Bill Laswell and Gigi talk about Ethiopian songs and global music, as well as their collaborations in Beat Tabla Science.

Friday 05/02/03
BARBARA HIGBIE II: VARIATIONS ON A FOLK PIANO
In the second of a two-part feature on pianist Barbara Higbie, we sit in the composers converted garage studio while she takes us into the lyrical roots of her compositions and talks about combining Terry Riley and Charlie Brown. The pianist and fiddler came to early renown on the Windham Hill label, recording the influential TIDELINE CD with then-husband, fiddler Darol Anger. That led to the formation of Montreux, a heady acoustic fusion of jazz, bluegrass and chamber music that included bassist Michael Manring and mandolinist Mike Marshall. Now, Higbie is focusing on solo piano for the first time, with the release of VARIATIONS ON A HAPPY ENDING (Slowbaby).
