FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Monday April 30, 2001
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH DAVID CULLEN
David Cullen was the lead artist for the very first Windham Hill Guitar Sampler recording. Since then he's been creating his own unique voice for acoustic guitar, playing a nylon stringed version and infusing his songs with jazz and blues influences on top of his classical training. David comes into the Echoes Living Room and plays music from throughout his career, including his latest CD, INDIGO BLUE (Solid Air).

Tuesday May 1, 2001
ERI SUGAI-JAPANESE ENYA
Eri Sugai is a Japanese singer who's voice is layered in ecstatic choirs on her album, MAI (Pacific Moon). Like Enya, Sugai has a lush, highly lyrical sound and a voice that seems to float above the clouds. In Tokyo, we talk with Sugai about some of her unusual vocal techniques.

Wednesday May 2, 2001
JEFF JOHNSON & BRIAN DUNNING'S ROUTES TO BYZANTIUM
Keyboardist Jeff Johnson and flutist Brian Dunning have released a string of albums with inspiration drawn from the novels of Stephen Lawhead and inflections derived form Ireland. Their latest CD, BYZANTIUM (Ark) follows still another Lawhead novel of the same name, as Johnson & Dunning provide the soundtrack for a monk on a journey. We'll follow his route with Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning.

Thursday May 3, 2001
RAVI & ANOUSHKA SHANKAR - RAGAS ACROSS GENERATIONS
Ravi Shankar is the venerable Indian sitarist, an icon of Indian music. At age 81, he's just released a new live album, FULL CIRCLE (Angel). Anoushka Shankar is his 19 year old daughter. Studying at the feet of her father, she's become a master musician herself with two albums of music, ANOUSHKA and ANOURAG (Angel). The father and daughter talk about the art of the raga and a music spirit that moves from Hinduism to Goa Trance.
