ECHOES PLAYLIST

For the Week of March 8, 1999

The following playlist is for one (1) week of ECHOES programming (5 days, 2 hours per day). Your local station may run only certain segments or one day of programming from this week's list especially if you hear Echoes on a weekend. Your station may also reverse the hours of Echoes, so that half hours 3&4 become 1&2.

We are pleased to offer many of the recordings you hear on ECHOES through our ECHODISC catalog. Following the playlist you'll find pricing of recordings from the catalog. If an album is not listed with a price that means it is not available through ECHODISC. You'll find ordering information at the end of this playlist. If you'd like to receive our free ECHODISC catalog, you can call 800-321-ECHO or e-mail us at: echoes@echoes.org. If you want a catalog, be sure to give us your postal address. You can also find the catalog and Echoes information on this site.

FEATURE: THE LOS ANGELES GUITAR QUARTET-GLOBAL GUITAR CLASSICISTS

The L.A. Guitar Quartet have spent most of their careers bending

their strings to the songs of the classical repertoire. But on

their latest CD, L.A.G.Q. (Sony Classical), they adapt their

instruments to some global sounds, including a Balinese gamelan,

African thumb pianos and drums and Incan pan-pipes. The four

members of the L.A. Guitar Quartet talk about their classical

                          world music.

AN ECHOES LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH SPOOL

Spool is the music of dark nights, rain swept streets and that

last drink before closing. A quartet based in San Francisco and

Chicago, they weave chill-out improvisations between ambient

music and jazz, Pink Floyd and Bill Evans. We ventured into an

industrial loft to capture Spool in an ambient living room

concert with music from their self-titled debut (New Dog Records)

                   and some brand new music.

              CAROLYN CRUSO-LOSS & TRANSFORMATION

Since 1985, Carolyn Cruso has played hammered dulcimer and flute

in a duo with her partner, Robert Almblade. But when he died

suddenly a couple of years ago, Carolyn had to re-assess her

career. The result was the album, Transformation (Blue Heron),

which continues the chamber folk sound she'd explored with

Robert. We talk with Carolyn in her Seattle home.

                  JAMI SIEBER'S ELECTRIC CELLO

Jami Sieber plays a cello that looks like a stick with a peg-leg.

She runs this electric variation on the concert instrument

through effects and delays to create the enchanting compositions

of her two solo albums, "Lush Mechanique" and "Second Sight" (Out

Front Music). Jami plucks her cello and shows us how she works

as a one woman chamber orchestra.
