FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

JANE SIBERRY-DOWNSIZING LIFE
Jane Siberry rarely takes the conventional approach. A major cult figure in the 1980s, she left her major label to form her own Sheeba records so she'd have more control of her music output. Jane Siberry has always been the Tom Robbins of singer/songwriters, spinning out that make the mundane profound. She has consistently defied conventional song-structure, turning her uncanny voice around stream-of-consciousness digressions and side-long glances and unique arrangements. Her latest album is a collection of collaborations called CITY (Sheeba Records) that includes her work with Hector Zazou and Barney, the purple dinosaur. Jane sits down to talk about her music and downsized life.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT OF SLACK KEY GUITAR WITH KEOLA BEAMER,
GEORGE KAHUMOKU JR, OZZIE KOTANI
Hawaiian Slack Key is a special style of guitar playing with the strings slightly looser than normal. It was born in Hawaii and in the last decade has experienced a rebirth through George Winston's Dancing Cat Records. In the heart of winter, three virtuosos bring some Hawaiian sunshine into the Echoes living room. Keola Beamer is the reigning king of Hawaiian Slack key and has a new album called SOLILOQUY (Dancing Cat). George Kahumoku, Jr. is one of the few slack key players who use a twelve string guitar. His latest is SWEET & SASSY (Keila Farm Records). Ozzie Kotani is from the younger slacker generation and his new album is TO HONOR A QUEEN (Dancing Cat) on which he plays the music of Hawaii's last Queen, Lili'uokalani. We'll hear these low key masters in solos, duos and a rare trio performance.

Thursday 03/07/02
SCOTT AUGUST'S VIRTUAL NATIVE MUSIC
Scott August talks about sending Native American flutes into virtual space on this edition of Echoes. Scott August isn't a Native American, but he plays their flutes on a new album called DISTANT SPIRITS (Cedar Mesa Music). Scott spends most of his time scoring soundtracks for TV commercials, but in his Los Angeles bedroom studio, August takes his collection of Native flutes and deploys them over digital atmospheres of the desert southwest with recordings from Canyon de Chelly and environments of the imagination. Scott takes us into a music that begins in a closet and ends in a canyon.

WILL ACKERMAN-PLAYING GUITAR AND HEARING VOICES
Will Ackerman built his career as a solo acoustic guitarist, founding Windham Hill Records 25 years ago and launching the acoustic guitar renaissance of the 1980s and 90s. On his new album, HEARING VOICES (Windham Hill), he uses his plaintive guitar melodies to underpin exotic and ethereal voices from singers including Happy Rhodes, Heather Rankin, and Samite. Singing in Native tongues, imaginary dialects and occasionally English, HEARING VOICES has a hymn-like quality. Will Ackerman reveals the voices in his head.
