INTERVIEWS AND CONCERTS FOR THE WEEK

Monday 01/14
SECRET SOURCES WITH ULRICH SCHNAUSS
German electronic artist plugs into his influences

Ulrich Schnauss is a German electronic artist who takes his forbears like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk and keys that sound into contemporary electro rhythms, a bit of new wave shoegazer romanticism, and melodies that have the infinite, never-ending sound of a Pachelbel Canon. Ulrich Schnauss steps into the darkness of the Echoes Chamber to hear his Secret Sources.

A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH MELANIE HUTTON & MARSHALL LEFFERTS
Other world music from Santa Barbara

Melanie Hutton and Marshall Lefferts put out an enchanting world fusion CD called Mystery of Souls in early 2007. They mix Hutton's ethno-abstract vocals and hammered dulcimer with Lefferts' guitars and a host of global percussionists, flutists and string players. We gather them together in a Santa Barbara studio where they play their music live on Echoes.

AN INTERVIEW WITH QNTAL: MEDIEVAL ROCK FROM GERMANY
Medieval traditionalists plug into electronic grooves

Old German, hurdy gurdys and a statuesque medieval singer collide in synthesizers, textures and grooves with Qntal. Principles Michael Popp on saz and oud and singer Sigrid Hausen also perform in the more traditional early music group Estampie. As Qntal, Sigrid becomes Syrah and they make a music that storms the gothic heavens. They talk about their medieval and modern worlds.
