FEATURES FOR THE WEEK

Tuesday 01/07/03
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ANCIENT FUTURE
Ancient Future whips up a global groove live in the Echoes Living Room. Ancient Future is the longtime world fusion ensemble that has been mixing Indian, Asian, African and Chamber music into global designs since their 1980 debut album. They've just released a new CD, PASSION PLANET (Ancient Future Music). In founder and guitarist Matthew Montfort's Marin County home, we gathered the band into his living room to play live on Echoes. This is an all-star group that includes singer Irina Mikhailova (of Medicine Drum and Lumin), Indian sitarist Habib Khan, Iranian percussionist Emam and keyboardist Doug McKeehan.

Thursday 01/09/03
THE MUNDI ENSEMBLE: GETTING MEDIEVAL IN TEXAS
The Mundi Ensemble sounds like the name of a classical group polaying ancient music on Original instruments. The Mundi Ensemble does play Ancient music, but with a post-modern sensibility. Headed up by British born guitarist Darrel Mayer, the ensemble plays ancient songs and new compositions with a minimalist sensibility and a hint of Duane Eddy, albeit on classical guitar. Their second album, AS BARLEY FALLS (check) is a whimsical mix of the old and new, recorded live in an Austin church where they're based. Members of the Mundi Ensemble talk about ancient sounds in the Texan heartland.

Friday 01/10/03
LOOP GURU LOOPS OUT
Loop Guru is the influential ethno-techno band from England that fuses samples of ethnic recordings into hallucinogenic soundscapes, usually powered by the beat. Loop Guru is still making music, but core members Sam Dodson and Jym Darling have created a couple of splinter groups, Thaw and Slipper. In Dodson's suburban London rowhouse, the two key us in to their new sound designs and give us a sample of some of their works in progress, including adaptations of early American jazz.
