A FANTASY SOUNDTRACK FOR THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Now that you've all seen the Lord of the Rings, we'll hear a suite of music inspired by the Tolkien novels. It's the music you wish had been used on the film soundtrack including music from Sally Oldfield's THE WATERBEARER and two artists who took their names from the novels, Gandalf and Shadowfax. It's a journey through Middle Earth in a Lord of the Rings Suite.

Tuesday 1/08/02
BRIAN ENO'S CYBER-NOIR SOUNDTRACKS
Brian Eno has a curious double-image. His most popular work is done under the auspices of other artists, through his productions of Talking Heads, David Bowie, and U2, including the Irish band's latest CD. But the other side of Eno, as sonic provocateur, is heard on his solo albums. He codified the concept of ambient music in the 1970s, embraced a grunge electronic aesthetic in the early 1990s and now seeks the holy grail of "generative music" essentially, music that composes itself. But his latest CD, DRAWN FROM LIFE (Astralwerks) finds Eno playing live, along with German electronic composer, J. Peter Schwalm. Many are calling it his most accessible album in years. From Eno's studio in London and Schwalm's in Frankfurt, two electronic artists talk of a music born in improvisation.

JANE SIBERRY-DOWNSIZING LIFE
Jane Siberry rarely takes the conventional approach. A major cult figure in the 1980s, she left her major label to form her own Sheeba records so she'd have more control of her music output. Jane Siberry has always been the Tom Robbins of singer/songwriters, spinning out that make the mundane profound. She has consistently defied conventional song-structure, turning her uncanny voice around stream-of-consciousness digressions and side-long glances and unique arrangements. Her latest album is a collection of collaborations called CITY (Sheeba Records) that includes her work with Hector Zazou and Barney, the purple dinosaur. Jane sits down to talk about her music and downsized life.

Thursday 1/10/02
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH HABIB KHAN
Habib Khan comes from a long line of Indian sitar players, but he's taken his instrument to San Jose where he's fallen in with a host of San Francisco Bay Area world fusionists. He mixes his sitar with guitarists, keyboard players and violinists in an Indian fusion that's heard on his latest album LONGING (X-Dot 25). In the living room of his anonymous San Jose tract home, Habib Khan opens up a world of exotic sound performing with a six piece ensemble. A track from this concert now appears on The Echoes Living Room Concerts Volume 7.

DWELLER AT THE THRESHOLD ANSWERS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR
The children of 1970's Space Music were born years ago. Now, the grandchildren of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Jean Michel Jarre are emerging. Among them are a Portland, Oregon group called Dweller at the Threshold. This synthesizer trio creates ambient spacescapes mixing old- style analog synthesizers with newer digital versions. Dweller recently released the album, OUROBORUS (Hypnos), while Dweller member Paul Ellis just put out his second CD, INTO THE LIQUID UNKNOWN (Hypnos). We talk to the Dwellers about music born in electronics and launched into space.
